KNIGHTLY CLOSE HELMET

This helmet represents the final evolution of the classic knightly head-piece. It is, as the name implies, close-fitting, so that it must be opened to be donned or removed.

This particular helmet was intended for live steel combat, and so has perforated steel in the eyeslots. It also has sunken and rolled borders on the gorget plates for added beauty and strength, and a plume holder at the rear base of the comb.

The visor is latched with a spring-pin and sneck hook arrangement, while the bevor (chin) is similarly latched with a hinged steel strap and sneck hook. These mechanisms act as double-locks for improved safety against the helmet opening accidentally during combat.

The empty holes around the base of the gorget are intended for rivets to hold a leather edge strip in place. To this would be sewn a fabric lining. They might also be filled with "dummy rivets" if no lining was to be used.
